Take action against Veterans Day!
9 June 2026
On June 14, the so-called “Veterans’ Day” is set to be “celebrated” here in Hamburg for the second time. This is an event intended to honor former and active-duty soldiers for their supposed “merits.” Events like this are meant to acclimate us to increasing militarization and arms buildup. Both are part of a global political landscape in which conflicts over spheres of influence, trade routes, and resources are increasingly being resolved by military means. Politicians and the wealthy in Germany, too, do not want to miss out on their share of this.
The consequences of this threaten us not only in the event of a possible war, but are already affecting us now. While we at the University of Hamburg face further budget cuts and one-third of students are at risk of poverty, the Bundeswehr University in Hamburg is receiving over one billion euros in additional funding.
Just how afraid the Bundeswehr is of protests against this was evident in the fact that, for last year’s so-called “citizens’ festival,” the Rathausmarkt was extensively cordoned off.
But we believe it’s important to make it clear in the public sphere that we have no intention of squandering human lives and money on the Bundeswehr. Instead, we demand funding for better living and studying conditions.
So let’s show that war propaganda is not welcome in Hamburg.
Join the actions against Veterans’ Day and take a stand against militarization and rearmament!
