Culture course leaders & tutors wanted for the summer semester!

We are currently looking for culture course leaders and tutors for the coming semester. Interested?

The cultural courses and tutorials are planned to run for one semester. Please register online using the form here by 11 March 2026.

The courses are scheduled to start in the week beginning 20 April and run for the duration of the lecture period. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us by email: kulturkurs"AT"asta.uni-hamburg.de.

You don't have to be undisputed experts. All you need is an interest in exploring scientific topics and cultural aspects together with others in a self-organised setting!

What do we as the AStA want to achieve with the cultural course programme?

‘It is the idea that studying at university not only opens up better economic and social opportunities, not only promises a career, but also offers the opportunity for a richer development of human potential and an appropriate fulfilment of one's own destiny.’ - Max Horkheimer

With the cultural course programme, we want to make the university a place that better fulfils its self-proclaimed goal of contributing to the richer development of human potential than is currently the case. Emancipatory education, critical scholarship and a culture of solidarity can help to achieve this. All too often, we encounter the university and our studies as something alien and restrictive – we want to counter this by jointly revitalising and appropriating the university, including through art, culture, music, literature, dance, theatre, reading circles, etc. Because higher education is what we make of it!

The AStA usually compensates for the effort involved in designing and continuously running the programme with a fee of €400.

Where does the cultural course programme take place?

In general, the cultural course programme takes place in person in university rooms. As the room situation on campus remains precarious due to numerous renovations, we would also like to offer online courses. We therefore welcome applications for both online and in-person courses.

If you offer your course online, you are responsible for the technical implementation yourself; unfortunately, we cannot provide technical support.

Organisational matters

The cultural courses and tutorials are self-organised seminars in which students and non-students come together to learn from each other – in contrast to credit point collecting and competitive culture.

Would you like to get together with others to make music, perform theatre, dance, engage in scientific analysis and criticism of social injustices, and discuss these issues? Then the cultural courses and tutorials are an opportunity to pursue this interest together with others!

The cultural courses offer the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of cultural aspects together with others: learning a new language, theatre, dance, music, photography, painting – there are no limits to your imagination!

The socially critical tutorials are a mixture of seminars, tutorials and reading circles dealing with critical content that is all too often neglected in a university system that is increasingly focused on training for the job market.
