After repeated anti-Semitic violence, the AStA calls for respect for the safety of others!
On Wednesday, 08/04/2024, there was an anti-Semitic attack on a visitor to the University of Hamburg. As a student representative, we strongly oppose any form of anti-Semitism and racism. We oppose any form of violence on campus and stand in solidarity with those affected.
The violence took place during a lecture entitled "Jew-phobia, anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism - updated forms of anti-Jewish violence" at the University of Hamburg. It has been the scene of anti-Semitic hecklers in the past and has been explicitly urged to disrupt them.
On Wednesday, the altercation escalated and this was followed by a serious physical assault. The victim was treated in hospital at the UKE Hospital. It is precisely in this context that we appeal for peaceful interaction and empathetic and scientific dialogue.
"As a student body, we have seen an increase in reports of verbal and physical anti-Semitic violence in recent months. We have also seen a rise in racism and anti-Semitism both on and off campus. The university must become a safe space for all. We must collectively take responsibility for this. [Daria Azadi]
In the wake of the ongoing insecurity on campus, we have specifically referred our anti-discrimination unit, which is a point of contact for those affected by discriminatory incidents at the university. We are happy to assist you.
It means continuing to intervene in the face of violence and not allowing people to be attacked and injured.
We wish those affected a speedy recovery!
