Department for campus democracy
The newly created Department of Campus Democracy is led by the university group of the Internationaler Jugendverband (IJV). Our task is clear: to strengthen the political student movements at the University of Hamburg, to unite their struggles, and to give them a common voice.
While universities across Germany are being ruined by austerity measures—including at the University of Hamburg by the city—while right-wing forces are regaining strength, social cuts are advancing, and at the same time billions are being poured into armament and militarization, the student body must not remain isolated and powerless. Right now, we need unity, organization, and a collective struggle—together with the employees—for the interests of all teachers, students, and workers at this university, standing side by side in solidarity.
Whether it's a demonstration or a cultural event, an alliance against cuts or the fight to reclaim student spaces such as the Teestube: all these struggles only gain strength when they are not isolated from each other, but are conducted in a coordinated manner.
This is exactly where we come in with the Department for Campus Democracy. We want to bring groups, initiatives, and actions together, organize exchanges and create connections in order to build and strengthen a broad, militant, and politicized student body on campus.
Talk to us if you are planning an event, if you need support, or if your cause could be part of a larger struggle. Because we can only assert our interests if we develop them collectively. A politicized campus is not an end in itself—it is our strongest weapon.
